Old School Café. A seriously authentic feel. Nothing fancy.

Love the vibe to this place. Sit yourself. Menus are handed out right as you sit down…

with a heavy ceramic mug of coffee.

Friendly wait staff is on you so fast and ready to recommend anything you may not be familiar with. “Killer Cakes for me..” “You got it…” and my waiter swiped the menu and was gone. I waited 6 minutes and the buttermilk pancakes were out.

The Pancakes at Lisa's Radial Cafe in Omaha

Really good looking stack of two pancakes and they are large. About 10 inches across and relatively thick. What really makes these buttermilks stand out is the good crust around the edges–showing the batter fried in butter on a traditional griddle.

Speaking of butter… I’m really not a fan of the butter in single-serve containers. Especially if they are cold… Cold butter forces you to put the butter on the pancakes and wait for melting. The underneath pancake suffers a bit too, getting some benefit of the butter on top but not much. So you are forced to choose one of the butters to go on the underside and wait for it to melt. This always leads to butter concentration in the middle as well as the awkwardness of asking for more butter. If you attempt to spread the butter too soon you get tears in the surface area. This leads to frustration and you have not even poured the syrup.

The syrup seemed to be the usual table syrup. Dark, flowing very fast and served at room temp. But, plentiful.

Review of Pancakes at Lisa's Radial Cafe in Omaha, NE

This is a very good tasting pancake though. It almost catches you off-guard. The combination of the crust and slight crunch on the outer shell and the thickness made a very tasty experience.

True to form I was forced to eat the entire serving–which leads to a full-factor much greater than other pancakes.

As you can see, the absorption rate of the butter and syrup is roughly 60%–meaning there is neither too much sogginess nor too much crumbling of the pancake.

There is residual shrapnel left over from pieces breaking away from the core… Usually, the strategy here is to consume the breakaways. Then, return to the core pancake. The breakaways were marginally satisfying though. They were cold which then led to a bit of panic eating with the core pancake…trying to finish before it all was cold. This all stems from serving the pancake with cold butter. It’s a waterfall effect that does not suit large pancakes well.

The final few bites were cold but satisfying due to the crunch of the outer crust. A very good balance of butter, syrup and crunch made the final lap fulfilling.

Overall, a good experience in a great environment. Cash only and as if we were transported back in time to a simpler place, service and fun.

Final word on the pancakes:

I have to give these 4 out of 5  pancakes…if the butter and syrup were warm these would be difficult to beat.
